Today I'm welcoming Kat de Falla to the blog to tell us about her latest book, share her writing inspirations and reveal one of the surprising 'research perks' that come with writing young adult fiction.
Welcome Kat. What inspired you to write your latest book?
My 10 and 12 year old boys told me there was nothing good to read. We brainstormed and they helped me come up with Flying Mutant Zombie Rats!
What was the hardest part of writing your book?
Nothing – I loved writing this book!
Wow, I love your positivity. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Yes! Go outside, get dirty, play hard! Playing a BMX video game is not the same as going outside and getting on your bike. I want kids to finish reading this book and say, “I’m going outside!”
How much of the book is realistic?
Everything except the monsters, portal, and talking cat :)
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
My husband and I grew up in the 1980’s in Milwaukee. He was one of the original BMXer’s – we based the book on his old hangouts back in the day.
What were the challenges (research, literary, and logistical) in bringing this book to life?
LOL – WE now own a modern Redline BMX bike for “research” purposes. Awesome!
If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about the sequels
This is the first book in the Moto Maddie BMX Portal Series – the next book will take place in the Milwaukee Public Museum.
Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your book?
A young Sean Penn.
What are you working on now?
A sci-fi book!
What book most influenced your life?
Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach.
That’s one of my favorites, too. Do you have a writing mentor or role model?
R.A Green is my role model – she is SO disciplined in her writing. I’m so haphazard.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
You’ll know you’re a writer if you CAN’T NOT write. :)
What is your favorite genre to write?
Fantasy…kind of the “Calgon, take me away” feeling…
For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paper/hard back books?
Both – it depends :)
Do you have a special time and place to write?
I love sitting in a recliner with my feet up!
What is the hardest thing about writing?
