Today I'm welcoming author E A Lake to the blog to talk about his debut novel WWIV: In The Beginning.
I liked this author from the moment he introduced himself: "I am an author and my pen name is e a lake. The e and the a mean nothing. So please just call me lake." Team that sort of sense of humor with a dark, dystopian, post-apocalyptic world and you're bound to get an interesting read.
Welcome E A Lake, and I'll try to remember to just call you Lake.
KB: What do you write?
Lake: Presently I am creating classic dystopian novels. The type with no Big Brother; no evil government. Just regular end of days stuff, with no answers for the human race. In each novel, I explore the dissention of humanity into places where we never expected to find ourselves. From there, we watch as humanity rebounds from the depths.
KB: Tell us about one of your books in 3 sentences.
Lake: WWIV – In The Beginning is a novel that explores what will happen when the lights go out, we lose all power, and have nothing left. We travel with one man, through this new landscape searching for his missing family. We watch as he learns to cope with the much-changed environment of his new world.
KB: Why do you write? Give us three reasons.
Lake: First off, I need to get these crazy dreams out of my head. And what better place than to put them safely down on paper. Secondly, I had put writing a novel on my bucket list. I just never realized how fun writing would be; so I kept going. Lastly, I love to tell stories. And isn’t that what fiction writing is all about? Telling good stories that people – hopefully – will find interesting.
KB: Complete the following sentences:
My first ever published piece of writing was… my current novel; WWIV – In The Beginning.
A book about writing I love is… On Writing by Stephen King.
A novel I love is… 1984 by George Orwell.
My favorite place to write is… sitting at the kitchen/dining room table.
Something/someone who helped me improve my writing is… my wife. She is well-read, so she’s a great beta reader.
Writing is… relaxing and a complete joy.
Editing is… long, laborious, and painful.
Publishing is… scary, but easier than I thought.
KB: Describe yourself in six words.
Lake: Tenacious, thoughtful, loyal, old-school, loving, and kind.
KB: Why are you kind?
Lake: I try to be as kind as I can to everyone. I figure there’s enough hate, anger and darkness in the world already. If I can help just one person feel better each day, I can be happy with myself.
KB: What’s your next big writing challenge?
Lake: Finishing the rewrites on Book One of my second Series, The Smith Chronicles. Books one and two are written, but they’re in rough shape. They were the first two manuscripts I put down on paper. So they’re somewhat unreadable in their current forms.
KB: What advice would you give to a brand new writer?
Lake: Write, write, and write some more. When you get stuck, keep writing. The only way you’ll ever get started is to begin putting your thoughts on paper (or computer as I do). And then have the courage to let someone read what you’ve written. You just may be surprised at their reaction.
KB: What does your current Twitter or other online profile say?
Lake: Here’s what I say on Twitter (kinda hokey) – Dystopian author trying to make it in the world of 10 billion books. WWIV – In The Beginning is now available at Amazon. Thanks! (I should maybe think about changing that).
KB: Anything else you'd like to say?
Lake: I appreciate allowing me to appear in your blog. A million thanks. Please consider giving my debut novel a read. Several people have already commented that they weren’t sure they’d like it, but they really did. They said they couldn’t put it down once they got into the book.
