Today’s Q&A is with novelist Eva A Blaskovic, author of Beyond The Precipice, a new novel that explores social issues, secrets, values and hard decisions. Eva opens up about her new book, her writing process, and talks sequels and prequels.
What do you write?
In non-fiction, I write articles on parenting, education, travel, how-to, and business. I am currently writing a parenting book.
I also write in the areas of literary fiction, psychological suspense, social drama, and coming of age.
Tell us about one of your books in 3 sentences.
In Beyond the Precipice, Bret Killeen, a gifted musician living in denial of his talent, is trapped by the wishes of his dead father, blackmailed by his brother, and rejected by his uncle. Only when he can confront his past and reconcile his guilt over the death he thinks he caused can he embrace a future that includes the girl he loves and the career he was meant to have.
Beyond the Precipice illuminates some of today’s social issues that debilitate youth such as Bret and adults such as his mother, who struggle to make their way in a world that perhaps emphasizes the wrong values, inviting readers to apply their own perspectives to the lessons buried within a story that is driven by unconditional love.
Why do you write? Give us three reasons.
1. I write because I can’t not write.
2. I write to inspire.
3. I write to educate.
Complete the following sentences:
My first ever published piece of writing was …
The poem “Life is Like a Fire” in a high school yearbook. It won second prize in the school’s poetry contest (population over 2,000 students).
A book about writing I love is …
Keys to Great Writing by Stephen Wilbers.
A novel I love is …
Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. It was a favorite long before the renewed popularity and movies.
My favorite place to write is …
In my office at home by the window. There’s latte nearby!
Something/someone who helped me improve my writing is …
Feedback from course instructors in the industry of writing and publishing.
Writing is …
Living. It’s the hardest work I’ve ever loved.
Editing is …
A fundamental component of writing. I became interested in editing because of my passion for writing. Of course, professional editing and proofreading are a must prior to publication.
Publishing is …
A process that utilizes industry experts in design, editorial, marketing, and distribution, adding value to an author’s work and making it readily available to readers. Fair-Trade Publishing is a promising emerging trend that allows authors to make a living from their writing, since most traditionally published authors today may receive only 6-10% royalties on print, spend much of their own time and money on marketing and distribution, and work other jobs to sustain a living.
Describe yourself in six words.
Analytical, natural teacher, complex, passionate, caring, hard working. (All right, technically, that’s eight words, but it’s six concepts.)
Why are you hard working?
I’ve become increasingly hard working in my life because it’s the only way to accommodate what I must do and what I want to do—until I can merge the two and experience something I once heard referred to as a vacation.
What’s your next big writing challenge?
Next up is a non-fiction parenting book (commissioned by my publisher), written concurrently with the sequel to Beyond the Precipice. Once the sequel is done, I will be writing book three to complete Ashby-BP Publishing’s request for a trilogy. There is also potential for a prequel to Beyond the Precipice.
What advice would you give to a brand new writer?
What does your current Twitter or other online profile say?
“I can write for 18 hours straight, but when it comes to housework, I have ADD. Mom of 4. High School Strategist. Short & long fic/non-fic. BEYOND THE PRECIPICE.”
What would you like it to say?
“Movie in the works for award-winning Beyond the Precipice. Single mom realizes dream and finally lives comfortably.”
